Sutton & Cheam pulled off a remarkable 12-11 victory over Welsh Wanderers in men's Division Two at Portsmouth today (11 October), recovering from 11-8 down - all in the hectic, final three minutes!
The Wanderers' collapse began when Stephen Bayles scored for Sutton, followed immediately afterwards by another goal from Jacob Tidy. There were 28 seconds left when Dicken Maclean equalised - and it was Phil Lucas who snatched the dramatic winner just as the final hooter sounded. Liverpool Lizards maintained their 100 per cent start in women's Division One at Wavertree Sports Park, Liverpool, today (11 October), beating old rivals City of Manchester 10-5 in their first match.
The other Liverpool team, the Liver Birds, also made a strong start, defeating Manchester Comets 8-4. Tyldesley won a tight game against Hucknall, 8-7. Cheltenham raced into an early 5-1 lead against Bristol Central in the opening men's Division One match at the Mountbatten Leisure Centre, Portsmouth, today (11 October) but in the end had to settle for a narrow 9-7 victory.
Thanks to four goals from Great Britain's Olympic captain Craig Figes, Bristol fought their way back to trail only 8-7 with a minute remaining. But David Taylor ensured that Cheltenham claimed the points with a goal two seconds from the end. Teams in Women's Divisions 1 and 2 are asked to note revised timings for matches at Grantham on 1 and 2 November. See fixtures pages for details.
Otter survived a real scare against City of Leeds, who led 5-2 after two quarters and 7-6 at the start of the last before the champions recovered to win the women's Division One clash at Gloucester (5 October) 11-7. Emma Hamilton-Foster scored five of the Otter goals.
Victory was a relief for the London side after their defeat at the hands of City of Coventry on day one. Coventry completed a hat-trick of weekend win, beating City of Leeds 15-9 and City of Sheffield 9-3. Otter also picked up maximum points against Sheffield (12-7) and Leeds (11-7) and so both they and Coventry are already through to the Super 5s. City of Manchester and Liverpool Lizards will look to follow suit when northern clubs play matches at Liverpool next weekend. In Division Two, also at Gloucester, West London Penguin made it six wins out of six, beating Liverpool Water Beatles 12-3, Welsh Wanderers 13-7 and second-placed Mid Sussex Marlins 10-7. Welsh Wanderers and the Water Beatles drew 6-6. Liverpool salvaged a point a minute from the end with a goal by one of the youngest players in the League - 13-year-old Emily Pyper. Solihull were held to a 9-9 draw by Worthing at the latest men's Division Three weekend in Grantham (4/5 October), but both these teams are already guaranteed a move into Championship 2 in the second phase of the season.
The Midlands club have enjoyed remarkable success since rejoining BWPL in 2012 and winning Championship 4, followed by Championship 3 last year. The bigger challenge of Championship 2 was assured when they walloped Otter 22-10 on day two at Grantham. Worthing also won - 6-4 against Hucknall - while Exeter enjoyed another goal spree in a 28-13 defeat of South Derbyshire. Carlisle and Exeter may be far apart geographically - but there was little to separate them in a goal-crazy Division Three match at Grantham (4 October), which the northerners eventually won 18-17.
For much of the game Carlisle held a narrow advantage - 6-5 after the first quarter, then 9-7 after two. Exeter recovered to lead 14-13 at the start of the last but then lost their way and were soon 18-15 in arrears. Even then, there was still time for Exeter to score twice more - in the last 32 seconds - but too late to deny Carlisle the points. Robinson (6) and Matt Grieve (5) were the chief Carlisle marksmen. Solihull remain top despite being held to a 9-9 draw by Worthing. The Midlanders scored six times in the third quarter on the way to a 12-5 win against Hucknall. Olympian Fran Clayton scored four as City of Coventry beat champions Otter 12-8 in women's Division One at the GL Pool, Gloucester (4 October) - Coventry's first-ever victory over the London side.
Coventry controlled the match after easing into a 4-1 first quarter lead. In the Yorkshire derby, Ness Cowton scored four times as City of Sheffield defeated Leeds 10-6. In Division Two, Mid Sussex Marlins enjoyed two big victories - 16-9 against Welsh Wanderers (including seven by Danica Brazier) and 16-7 against Liverpool Water Beatles. Leaders West London Penguin also won twice, defeating the Water Beatles 12-3 and the Wanderers 13-7. Karan Basu (pictured), 16 in August, pulled off a hat-trick of penalty saves during Watford's three men's Division Four matches at Basildon. Not that Watford would have struggled even without their young goalkeeper's heroics. In all, they amassed 68 goals in victories over Cheltenham Spartans, Southampton and Basildon, boosting prospects of a top five placing and a chance to challenge for promotion to Division Three.
