SPENCER-BOYCE'S LATE STRIKE

30/1/2022

After their spectacular draw with Penguin on day one, Invicta were involved in another cliffhanger finish in men's Championship 1 at Haberdashers today. This time they drew 12-12 with Sutton & Cheam, James Spencer-Boyce scoring the final goal for Invicta with just two seconds remaining.

Sutton were caught after leading 10-8 and then 12-10 in the final minutes. Callum Bailey was again the leading Invicta goal scorer, with five.

In the London derby between two very old rivals, Penguin beat Polytechnic 10-8, with Charles Kingsmill netting a hat-trick.

At Bolton, Caledonia claimed a second win - 15-7 against Watford - while Joe Jenkins-Delf scored seven in Welsh Wanderers' 16-11 victory over Exeter.

In men's Championship 4, Sedgefield's 6-5 defeat at the hands of Bridgefield meant that Watford Saxons will be the only team progressing to the final weekend of competition with a 100 per cent record from five matches. Saxons' counterattacking game proved too much for Coventry, who went down 16-4. Arish Patel and Matt Williams both scored hat-tricks.

Invicta and Penguin ended all square at 11-11 after a thrilling men's Championship 1 clash at Haberdashers today.

Penguin began at breakneck speed, going 3-0 up after the opening three minutes. Their pit forward, Mehet Ali Arat, proved quite a handful for the Invicta defence but it was Callum Bailey's powerful shooting that kept Invicta in the game. They led for the first time at 5-4 midway through the second period, improved to 8-6 later on - at which point Penguin rallied to hold a brief 9-8 advantage.

The game went to 10-10 before an exclusion for an illegal entry cost Penguin a penalty - easily converted by Bailey for his eighth goal of the match. Within half a minute, Joe Ortiz claimed the final goal of a super game. Earlier, Invicta beat Polytechnic 9-7, stretching clear in the late stages with goals by James Spencer-Boyce and Dan Atkinson.

At Bolton, Caledonia netted six in the second quarter on the way to a 13-10 victory over Welsh Wanderers. Dominque Zahra scored four for the Scots.

In men's Championship 4, Sedgefield beat Caledonia Storm 12-10 to claim their third win of the season. Watford Saxons also won for third time, 11-6 against Sheffield Dolphins.

LIVERPOOL END CHAMPIONS' RUN

23/1/2022

City of Manchester girls’ proud record of 26 consecutive BWPL victories ended today when Liverpool Lizards battled to a 6-5 Super 5s success at Aldershot.

The last time the reigning champions lost in BWPL was way back in January 2019 when, once again, the party was spoiled by Liverpool – 11-10.

The latest clash was close all the way through. Katie Hesketh’s three goals helped give Liverpool a narrow lead but the sides were level at 5-5 when Emmie-Rose Eastwood netted for Manchester early in the final period. The winner, from Molly Boniface-Adams, came 2.46 from the end.

In another closely-fought women’s Super 5s match, Coventry claimed their second win of the weekend – 7-6 against Sheffield Sharks. Boosted by a couple of goals from Anna Motley, Sheffield recovered from 6-3 down to 6-6 only for Rhianne Oscroft to grab the Coventry winner with 1.49 remaining.

In the men’s Super 5s, Manchester continued to dominate as Spilios Kaloudis scored three in a 13-4 defeat of Solihull. A four-goal spurt in the second period gave Lancaster the edge against Sheffield, setting up a 9-8 win.

Hucknall completed the first weekend of women's Championship 1 matches at Matlock with three victories. The won twice on day two - 16-6 against Liverpool Liver Birds and 11-7 against Rotherham Metro.

ARSHIA STARS FOR SHEFFIELD

Playing twice in a day in the Super 5s invariably poses a formidable challenge – as Cheltenham men proved at Aldershot.

After losing 10-7 to Solihull in their first match, Cheltenham went down 11-6 to Sheffield, Arshia Keyghabadi, leading scorer for their Dolphins side in the past, making the step-up to senior level look straightforward with four goals.

City of Manchester raced into an 8-2 lead against Lancaster and eventually won 14-8.

A second game of the day also proved difficult for Otter in the women’s Super 5s as they lost 12-7 to Coventry.

In women’s Championship 1, there were four goals each for Amelie Cornell and Charlotte Hopwood in Liverpool Liver Birds’ 13-9 defeat of Mid Sussex Marlins. City of Bristol recovered from 7-1 down to 7-4 against Caledonia before Niamh Moloney’s fourth goal ensured an 8-4 victory for the Scots.

OTTER SALVAGE A POINT

22/1/2022

In a wildly fluctuating launch to the women’s Super 5s campaign, Otter and Liverpool Lizards ended up drawing 14-14 at Aldershot today.

Otter set the pace early on, building a 4-1 lead, but a six-goal salvo in the second period saw the Lizards recover to go 11-7 ahead. They stretched the advantage to 14-10, only for the London side to stage a dramatic last period fightback, led by Emily Campbell-Lamerton and Rebecca Mulcahy, who both scored twice.

Champions Manchester eased to victory in their opening match, defeating Sheffield Sharks 20-7.

In the men’s Super 5s, Solihull opened with a 10-7 win against Cheltenham, repeating their success when the sides met in the final game of the Division 1 programme. Cheltenham pulled level at 7-7 only for Solihull to clinch the points with goals in the final quarter by Pawal Wielogorski, Ryan Padbury and Arthur Davies.

In women’s Championship 1, India Wilkinson scored seven in Hucknall’s 14-11 success against City of Bristol.

WORTHING HOLD ON

16/1/2022

Worthing withstood a late City of Bristol rally to claim a 6-5 victory in men’s Championship 2 at Watford.

Toby Underwood’s three goals helped Worthing build a 6-3 lead. Bristol had the better of the final period, scoring through Stuart Fennell and Nathan Brown, but just failing to grab a point.

Manchester Hawks‘ 21-6 defeat of Hucknall featured 11 different scorers, led by Harry Dunkerley (4), Rory Inman (3) and Adam Lecomber (3). Guy Broadhurst hit five in Portobello’s 16-7 win against Castleford. Cheltenham Spartans beat Otter 16-14 and were the only team not to lose a game during the opening weekend.

DURHAM, SOUTHAMPTON SET THE PACE

16/1/2022

Durham Palatinates and Southampton completed the first weekend of men’s Championship 3 matches with triple wins.

Durham had to work hard against Rotherham Metro who led 9-8 midway through the third period before goals by Tom Yates (2), Blake Grove and Max Bethel took the students home at 14-12.

Southampton scored four times without reply in the second quarter to take charge of their match against the British Army. They won 11-5, including four goals from Charles Roberts and a Jean-Christophe Heib hat-trick.

NARROW WIN FOR HAWKS

15/1/2022

Picture
Manchester Hawks staged a strong finish to edge out Portobello 12-11 in men’s Championship 2 at East Manchester.

The teams were tied at 9-9 towards the end of the third period, but Hawks then scored three times without reply – through Adam Lecomber, James Blenkinsop and Harry Dunkerley – to take charge. Portobello rallied again and replied through Ed Grundy and Guy Broadhurst, but too late to avoid a 12-11 defeat.

After winning their first game, Otter came unstuck at Watford against City of Bristol, who rattled in eight goals in the final period in a 17-10 win. Top marksmen for Bristol were Will Thompson and Tom Whiting, both with four. Cheltenham Spartans fought back to draw 9-9 with Worthing, Rob Parker and Taylor Walsh scoring the only goals of the final period.

Durham Palatinates and Southampton both registered two wins in men’s Championship 3. In their only match, Rotherham Metro outplayed Birmingham 20-7, including five goals each for Ben Alderson and Neil Swainson.

OTTER WIN AT LAST

15/1/2022

Picture
After failing to gain a point in men’s Division 2 during the first phase of the season, Otter bounced back with an exciting late 10-9 victory over Worthing at the start of the Championship 2 programme at Watford today.

Worthing actually started the final period with a 9-7 lead. But two quick goals by Nathan Perren levelled it and it was Omiros Pantazis who claimed the Otter winner a minute from the end.

In contrast, Hucknall, having dropped just one point in men’s Division 3 in the first phase, were well beaten 17-10 by Portobello at East Manchester.

In men’s Division 3, the Army recovered from 5-1 down to level at 6-6 against Croydon only for Tom Andrews (Photo: Trevor Hyde) to win it at 8-6 for Croydon with two goals – the second just one second from the final whistle. Chinyere Owotor scored four in Durham Palatinates’ 11-6 victory over Birmingham.

SARAH STEALS THE POINTS

9/1/2022

Cheltenham’s winning start to the women’s Championship 2 campaign ended when they were edged out 11-10 by Otter Lutra at Walsall today.

Otter’s all-junior team led 5-1 at one stage but Cheltenham gradually fought back and the game reached 10-10 in the final quarter. More than four minutes remained when Sarah Ellis-Keeler scored what proved to be the decisive goal.

Penguin Emperors made it three wins from three games but were pushed all the way by Sheffield Stingrays before winning 7-5. A hat-trick from Rachel Bull took Penguin clear after the sides were locked at 4-4 after two periods.

Birmingham snatched a point against Southampton when Emma Marshall converted a penalty awarded just nine seconds from the end to make the score 9-9. Welsh Wanderers’ 11-8 defeat of Watford featured seven goals from Rose Griffiths.
