DEATH OF TONY SCOTT

19/9/2016

Tony (Scotty) Scott, leading member for many years of Birkenhead's powerful team in the former men's National League, has died after a very short battle with cancer.

A former GB junior international, Tony was in Birkenhead sides that won ASA senior and junior titles. Both he and his twin brother Steven were club stalwarts for many years, playing alongside the likes of Howie Cartwright, Paul Rollinson, George Mears, Mark Mitchell and Maurice Caldwell.

Tony also appeared for Southport against Birkenhead in the ASA senior final of 1984.

PHASE TWO CHANGES

19/9/2016

Clubs should please note that slight changes have been made to the provisional list of phase two venues and divisions published on the website last month.

Some divisions now have a weekend split across two venues in order to reduce travel costs.

REF EVALUATIONS

19/9/2016

Teams endeavouring to report their referee evaluations today following matches at the weekend will have experienced problems - due to a temporary bug in this website's system!

Don't worry. We're extending the deadline and you will receive an email with further instructions in a while.

ENGLISH ROSES WIN BRONZE!

19/9/2016

Congratulations to English Roses - including BWPL President Pippa Jones - who claimed a bronze medal at the European Masters Championships in Rijeka, Croatia.

Roses entered the competition for 30+ teams, although, as Pippa reports: "We had the oldest players by some considerable margin, including five over-50s!"

In the first stage, Roses lost to strong teams from ASD Argentario (Italy) and Germany's ETV Hamburg - and also went down 7-5 to Stepp Prague. It meant that the Prague team and the Roses met again in the bronze medal play-off - and this time the result was very different.

In a match where the lead changed hands several times, the Roses eventually squeezed home 8-7, thanks to a goal 33 seconds from the final hooter by Liz Palmer. EVERGREEN ANDY IN TOP FORM!

18/9/2016

Who's the best goalkeeper in the lower divisions of the men's leagues? It's a fair bet that most people would vote for veteran ex-GB regular Andy Knight (pictured), who was in stunning form at Ponds Forge despite his side's 18-11 defeat at the hands of Division 3 rivals Ealing.

In men's Division 4, a goal 22 seconds from the end by Greg Jackson salvaged a 9-9 draw for Invicta Marlins against Portobello. Cheltenham Spartans cruised into an early lead against Grantham Knights and eventually won 19-11.

Warwick enjoyed their debut weekend in Division 5, beating the other new boys, Spalding, 17-9, including six goals from Scott Haystead and four from Ashley Keen.

Tyldesley waited until the third period to grab a lead against Watford Saxons but eventually powered clear to win 13-8. Lead scorers were Addison Brown (4) and Adam Toone (3).

OTTER'S PERFECT START

18/9/2016

Otter Lutra made it three wins from three women's Division 2 matches at Ponds Forge today, beating Manchester Comets 11-8. This included two goals each for Holly Campbell, Nahn van Wyk and Heather and Isobel Keith.

In women's Division 3, Southampton picked up their first points, beating Sunderland 7-2. Anashe Chisadza contributed a hat-trick.

SOUTHAMPTON WIN AGAIN

18/9/2016

Southampton men followed up a 6-3 victory over Cambridge on day one with a 9-8 success against Division 3 rivals Watford at Ponds Forge today.

Watford pulled up from 5-2 down to 5-5 early in the third period but then saw Southampton counter strongly and lead 9-6 with goals by Charles Roberts, Cianan Mann, Panagiotis Logothetis and Jackson Mullins.

The final period belonged to Watford. Ciaran Walshe reduced the margin to 9-7, but Watford then paid the penalty for failing to convert two man-up opportunities. Their last goal came 34 seconds from the end - by Nandor Cseh - and so, for the third time during the weekend, Watford teams suffered a single goal defeat.

In women's Division 2, Tyldesley conceded five goals to Manchester Comets before four-goal Grace Morley led a fightback. The points went to Comets in the end - by 8-7 - but Tyldesley will rue two missed penalty chances.

WATFORD'S DOUBLE DISAPPOINTMENT

17/9/2016

Watford's two British League teams were out of luck at Ponds Forge today, both losing their matches by a single goal.

The first team began their Division 3 clash with familiar rivals Ealing in confident style, establishing an 8-5 lead early in the third period. But the game changed dramatically after that as a goal by Jacopo Gobbi brought the teams level at 9-9 - followed by further goals from Gobbi and Adam Aubeelack. Gianluca Valle replied for Watford, but they were unable to salvage a point as Ealing clung on to an 11-10 lead in a tense final minute and a half.

Watford's young second string - the Saxons - made their BWPL debut against another new team, Warwick. From the start, Warwick were never behind, but Watford, boosted by five goals from Jack Warman, battled to the end - and could easily have clinched a draw in the last minute. Scott Haystead (4) and Ashley Keen (4) were the main scorers for Warwick.

In women's Division 3, four goals by Lauren Keight ensured a 9-7 victory for Birmingham over Southampton, who never recovered from losing the opening period 5-0. Liverpool Water Beatles' runaway 25-2 win against Sunderland included an eight-goal haul for Molly Boniface-Ashton.

Scottish representatives Portobello began their men's Division 4 campaign with a 15-8 success against Cheltenham Spartans. Clayton Woods scored five and Ben Scot three.

YORK LEAVE IT LATE

17/9/2016

A goal 50 seconds from the end by Tobias Clarkson salvaged a men's Division 4 point for York City in an 11-11 draw with Bridgefield at Ponds Forge today.

There was another tense finale in Division 3, where promoted Castleford edged a 10-9 victory over Manchester Hawks. At the end of the third period, Castleford led 9-5, but they then struggled to contain a fightback by Hawks, who pulled up to 9-9 with goals by James Moffat (2), David Teasdale and James Salt.

Less than two minutes remained when Joe Walsh claimed a man-up winner for Castleford. Declan Thompson scored five for Castleford and Luke Franks three.

TEN-GOAL ADDISON HAMMERS NEWCOMERS

17/9/2016

British League newcomers Spalding found the going tough on their debut in men's Division 5 at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, today .

They were beaten 19-8 by Tyldesley, Addison Brown leading the way for the winners with a personal tally of ten goals.

There wasn't such a successful start for Tyldesley's girls - they were level with Otter Lutra at the halfway stage, but the Londoners eventually took the points at 12-7, including four goals from Isobel Keith and three from Holly Campbell. Jo Costello (3) was Tyldesley's lead scorer.
