SUDDEN DEATH OF RON WINN

21/4/2015

The Lancaster club is mourning the sudden death of head coach Ron Winn, one of the officials chiefly responsible for inspiring the club's remarkable rise from local league level to ASA and British League titles.

Club President Mike Hesketh said today: "It is with deep regret that City of Lancaster Swimming and Water Polo Club announces the passing away yesterday of their head water polo coach John "Ron" Winn. Ron has been a long-standing member as a swimmer, water polo player and coach and our teams appearing at the forthcoming British Championships and National Age Groups will feel lost without his presence.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

BWPL President Pippa Jones recalls: "I have known Ron for many years and remember awarding him the National Water Polo Coaches' Association Coach of the Year back in the early 1990s for his work at Lancaster. We have all seen the fruits of that over the years as Lancaster went from success to success, producing a long list of high quality players, including members of the 2012 Olympic squad.

"One of my memorable times with Ron was when he first came to the National Academy at Millfield and I was tutoring his level 2 qualification. We had a great week endlessly discussing water polo coaching methods and analysing everything down to the last detail.

"The most impressive thing about Ron was the he never, for one moment, thought he knew it all - he had a great capacity to keep asking and learning. It was a privilege to work with him and I found him to be an inspiration."

TEAM NAMED TO PLAN FUTURE OF SPORT

17/4/2015

The ASA Water Polo Management Group, led by Coventry's Ian Elliot, has completed the appointment of six team leaders. They include two British League officers - Competition Co-ordinator Mike Hesketh (competititons and events) and Officials' Co-ordinator Mike Jukes (workforce development of match officials).

The other team leaders are Phil Winstanley (pathway performance), Chris Dean (marketing, communications and commercial), Sarah Dunsbee (coach education and development) and Simon Tinkler (governance). For more details, see ASA website.

In the light of the Tunnicliffe review, the Group has been tasked with formulating a plan for the future of water polo and will be presenting its proposals to the ASA in October.

British League chairman David Andrews said today: "I am hugely encouraged by Ian Elliot's appointment to lead water polo and sense he is a man the League and the sport as a whole will support."
