The countdown has started for the launch of another spectacular BWPL season. And we're thrilled to report a key addition - the League's academy for young referees under the direction of former international official Tad Detko.

​Over many years, there have been concerns about the rapidly declining number of active referees in the UK - and, in particular, the apparent failure to encourage and develop those who complete a basic course.

​The academy is the League's response - an initiative aimed at ensuring that young officials who show promise and have ambitions to progress are given every incentive to do so. The first official gathering of the academy will take place during the Ponds Forge weekend, 14/15 October; its members will have opportunities to referee and be mentored during the season.

Other news from BWPL:

​+ As FINA has postponed until October a decision on proposed rule changes to the world game, our 2017/18 programme will operate under the same water polo rules as last season. The proposed pre-season seminar for referees and coaches will not take place.

​+ Application of misconduct regulations remains unchanged.

​+ Guidance notes for club evaluations of referees have been updated and re-issued - see Info page.

+Club evaluations of referees now go to the BWPL Officials' Group, chaired by President Pippa Jones.

​More detailed information has been circulated to all member clubs, delegates, referees and table officials. In all matters, BWPL continues to work with Swim England Water Polo Management Group to help improve the sport.

Social networking provides exciting opportunities in helping BWPL clubs engage with members and the public, but it's worth pointing out as a new season edges ever closer that it can also present dangers and negative consequences if abused by users. These include:

​+ Cyber bullying, through posts which are upsetting to people and often inaccurate.

+ Causing offence to individuals, or other clubs and organisations.

​+ Exposure to inappropriate content, or offensive comments or pictures.

​Social network sites should never be used as a medium by which to abuse or criticise Swim England members, clubs or officials, or any member of the public or other organisation. To do so may be in breach of Swim England Rules and Regulations. Failing to use social media in a responsible manner may also leave the user open to legal action.
