Sutton & Cheam will need a point from their final match against Welsh Wanderers at Haberdashers tomorrow to make certain of clinching the men’s Championship 1 crown.
Ashley Castle scored six as Sutton defeated City of Bristol 19-10 today while Welsh Wanderers had their title ambitions blown apart in an 11-10 defeat against Watford.
That left Sheffield as the only team with a chance of overhauling Sutton. Sheffield beat Exeter 14-11 today, featuring hat-tricks by Chris Armstrong, Joel Abbott and Alex Gaywood. If they defeat Invicta tomorrow and Sutton fail to secure at least a draw against Wanderers, Sutton and Sheffield will finish level on points – with goal difference to decide the champions after these teams drew earlier in the season.
Wanderers began the day with high hopes of challenging for the title, but Watford hadn’t read the script, claiming a dramatic victory after trailing 7-4 at the start of an eventful third period. The rest of that quarter saw Watford hit back to lead 9-8 with goals by Josh Barrett (2), Finlay Parnell, Adam Page and Tom Kelly.
Sam Carling made it 10-8 to Watford at the start of the last, only for Wanderers to pull level at 10-10 through Matt Griffiths and Lewis Gilmour. Parnell hit the Watford winner 1.14 from the end.
Finlay Nesbitt scored four in Caledonia's 13-8 defeat of Invicta.
