The sides reached the halfway stage locked at 7-7. But then Birmingham enjoyed a golden third quarter in which they scored six goals without reply through Nathan Wilkes (2), Sam Thompson, Drazen Videc, Jason Culloo, Matt Foulds. Wilkes finished with five goals and Videc four.
Consolation for Castleford is that they will join Birmingham and third-placed Cheltenham Spartans in Division 3 at the start of next season. Spartans’ campaign ended in dramatic defeat – they went down 11-10 to Cambridge, who trailed 9-6 after three periods but then stole victory when Nick Ludford equalised with 57 seconds left – and scored the winner just 10 seconds from the end.
Tyldesley’s Addison Brown scored nine in his team’s 19-17 win against Rotherham Metro.
