City of Leeds took a big step towards claiming the women's Championship 1 crown with a 12-7 victory over near-rivals City of Sheffield at Ponds Forge today.
There was nothing between the teams in the early stages and the game was tied at 5-5 towards the end of the third period when Leeds struck twice with goals by Emily Pilkington and Molly Heneman. When Emily Sutcliffe made it 8-5 at the start of last, Sheffield's challenge faded.
In the women's Super 5s, Caledonia led Coventry 3-2 after the first period but once Fran Clayton edged the Midlands side into a 4-3 lead with a goal two minutes into the second period, Coventry took control. Eventually they won 10-5.
