Manchester Comets defeated Watford 9-7 in the final match of the women’s play-offs at the Jason Kenny Centre, Bolton, to grab the runners-up spot and clinch a place alongside competition winners Mid Sussex Marlins in Division 2 at the start of next season. Watford and Caledonia drop to Division 3.
Comets raced into a 6-1 lead against Watford but faced a real battle before ensuring victory. Watford fought back to trail only 7-6 near the end of the third period and then 8-7 when Anna Lord fired past the Manchester goalkeeper with 1.17 remaining. Sarah Craig’s fifth goal of the game for Manchester was added just one second from the final whistle.
Marlins won 13-10 against Caledonia in a match which for much of the time was just as tense. The Scots led 9-8 midway through the third quarter but were then overhauled as Maisie Standen and Lillie Standen took their personal goal tallies to four apiece.
