Champions City of Manchester made an impressive start to the men's Division 1 campaign, defeating last season's runners-up Cheltenham 11-7 at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, today.
Centre-forward Jordan Elliot gave Manchester the early edge, scoring all the goals as his team took a 3-1 lead. Cheltenham were briefly level at 4-4 when Adam Legge equalised with a strong shot.
After that, Joe O'Regan took charge. He scored four as Manchester raced to a 9-4 lead in the third and then added a fifth in the final period.
Penguin, Championship 1 winners last season, took the move up to Division 1 in their stride, beating Sheffield 14-10. Remarkably, Sheffield's Joel Abbott (Photo: Trevor Hyde) top scored in the game with seven, including four in the last quarter. Graham Harrington scored four in Lancaster's 11-6 win against Invicta while Caledonia withstood a late rally from Polytechnic to win 13-11.
Sedgefield are already looking favourites for top spot in men's Division 4 after outplaying Watford Saxons 18-5. John Pratt scored seven and Ben Alderson five.
