Both competitions are required following the decision to reduce the size of BWPL over the next two years, a process that begins in the second phase of this season, with women's Championship 2 and men's Championships 3 and 4 all cut.
The play-offs are designed to ensure that a door remains open for any competing team to retain League membership in the long term. This is how they will operate:
Women: After this season's phase one, the bottom two teams in Division 2 and top two in Division 3 compete in a mini league tournament for two places in Division 2 in 2023/24.
Men: Two qualify for Division 3 next year from a four-team mini league involving the bottom two from Division 3 in the first half of this season and the top two from Division 4. Same scenario for bottom two in Division 4 and top two in Division 5.
