Tom Curwen led the way for Lancaster, scoring four times as his team built what seemed an unassailable lead. But Caledonia's fighting qualities surfaced again as they cut the margin to 9-6 after three periods - and then refused to give way as Lancaster once again established an 11-8 advantage.
Goals in the space of 50 seconds by Mark Speed and Alan Shepherd brought Caledonia right back into contention. In a dramatic finale, Curwen was excluded with 25 seconds remaining; and there were 11 seconds left when Alasdair Campbell notched the man-up equaliser.
It was a different story for Caledonia in women's Division 1. They went down 17-7 to champions Liverpool Lizards, whose main scorers were Katie Hesketh (Picture: Trevor Hyde) with five, Kathryn Fowler (4) and Beth Bolton (3).
Manchester beat Leeds Sharks 10-7 but had to work hard for the points. Leeds trailed only 8-7 thanks to goals late in the third period by Emily Pilkington and Candyce Schroeder. Manchester made sure of victory with goals in the last two minutes by Ella Chadderton and Courtney Dean.
