Portobello's rebuilt young team took a vital step towards the Championship 4 title at Northampton when they defeated immediate challengers South Derbyshire 16-8.

South Derby recovered from 7-1 down to 7-5 at one stage, but in the end couldn't keep pace with the Scots, whose scorers included Felix Charlton (4) and Lewis Pritchett (3).

Invicta Marlins and Grantham were level at 8-8 with less than two minutes remaining. Then two goals by Dan Bonthuys clinched a vital 10-8 victory for Marlins.

HOLT STARS IN WATFORD WIN

Experienced left-hander Andy Holt led the way for Watford with six goals as they beat Sutton & Cheam 13-9 in the opening men's Championship 2 clash at Watford today.

Birmingham and Southampton fought out an exciting 11-11 draw. Southampton edged ahead 3-1 in the second period but Birmingham pulled it back to 7-7 by the end of the third and then, as the tension mounted, led 10-8 and 11-9.

Less than two minutes remained when Panagiotis Logothetis netted for Southampton. And it was left to Josh Maclean to grab the equaliser - with three seconds remaining!

GRANTHAM CHASE PROMOTION

Grantham improved their chances of claiming one of three men's Championship 4 promotion places with an easy 15-5 win over Bedford at Northampton today. Max Clarke and Nick Caulfield led the scoring with four goals each.

Invicta Marlins are also in the running for a move up. They made short work of Sheffield Dolphins, cruising to a 19-5 victory with four goals apiece for Tom McDonald, Dan Bonthuys, Yannis Stavrakakis and 16-year-old James Spencer-Boyce.

South Derbyshire were also among the goals, hammering Dover 23-8 - including a nine-goal haul for the division's top marksman Neil Swainson.
