WATFORD'S DOUBLE DISAPPOINTMENT

17/9/2016

Watford's two British League teams were out of luck at Ponds Forge today, both losing their matches by a single goal.

The first team began their Division 3 clash with familiar rivals Ealing in confident style, establishing an 8-5 lead early in the third period. But the game changed dramatically after that as a goal by Jacopo Gobbi brought the teams level at 9-9 - followed by further goals from Gobbi and Adam Aubeelack. Gianluca Valle replied for Watford, but they were unable to salvage a point as Ealing clung on to an 11-10 lead in a tense final minute and a half.

Watford's young second string - the Saxons - made their BWPL debut against another new team, Warwick. From the start, Warwick were never behind, but Watford, boosted by five goals from Jack Warman, battled to the end - and could easily have clinched a draw in the last minute. Scott Haystead (4) and Ashley Keen (4) were the main scorers for Warwick.

In women's Division 3, four goals by Lauren Keight ensured a 9-7 victory for Birmingham over Southampton, who never recovered from losing the opening period 5-0. Liverpool Water Beatles' runaway 25-2 win against Sunderland included an eight-goal haul for Molly Boniface-Ashton.

Scottish representatives Portobello began their men's Division 4 campaign with a 15-8 success against Cheltenham Spartans. Clayton Woods scored five and Ben Scot three.
