EX-SUTTON PLAYER'S AMAZING MARATHON

30/8/2016

After 42 hours of battling strong tides, storms, cold, body cramps and jelly stings, former Sutton & Cheam player Mickey Helps was forced to give up his attempt at a double crossing of the English Channel just 1.5 miles from home. But what an achievement!

The 50-year-old, a member of Sutton’s all-conquering team of the late 1980s and early 1990s, undertook the marathon in memory of Sutton teammate and ex-Welsh international Mark Shepherd, whose death was reported on the BWPL website in January. Mickey was also raising funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Swimming the Channel – one way! - was the second of three challenges Mick had set himself this year. He had already completed the Gibraltar Straits swim. The Dardanelles Straits is next on the agenda.
As a veteran of Iron Man and triathlon events– not to mention Jersey’s round-the-island swim – “Metal Mickey”, as he’s known, decided that the one-way English Channel swim was only a start.

He completed the first crossing in just over 19 hours. But, in all, he was to cover a distance of 92 miles which, subject to official ratification, ranks as one of the world's longest and furthest recorded open water swims. Only complete exhaustion led his support team, which included current Sutton players Matt Holland and Greg Dodds, to haul Mickey out of the water agonisingly short of his goal.

SUPER FIVES FINALE!

21/8/2016

The men's and women's Super 5s finale to the 2016/17 season is to be staged at Gloucester's GL1 Leisure Centre for the first time - on 18/19 March.

The League made considerable efforts to book one of the country's 50m pools, but this proved impossible. "It means that, strictly speaking, we will not be using a maximum-sized 25m pitch," said League chairman David Andrews. "But GL1 is a superb venue already popular with BWPL teams and I'm confident it will provide a magnificent end to another campaign."

Venues for all fixtures in phase two will be published within a few days. But the League is delighted to announce that there will be two weekend events at the new, eight-lane 25m pool at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, Elstree, Hertfordshire.

This facility, part of the Medburn Sports Centre, opened only last January and has given a big boost to a school with a long history of excelling at water polo, including English Schools' titles.

Haberdasher's Aske's is opposite the Aldenham Country Park and Elstree Aerodrome, just over one mile outside the North London boundary. It is easily accessed from the M1 (Junction 5), M25 and A1.

REGISTRATIONS DEADLINE

2/8/2016

A reminder to all BWPL clubs that the deadline for 'free' player registrations for the new season is 14 August. That's slightly later this year due to recent upgrading of the online system.

After 14 August, all registrations are classed as 'late' - which means a £5 fee applies in each case.

Not too many weeks to wait before the start of another season! As usual, we begin the programme in spectacular style with a 32-match, two-pitch bonanza involving teams from five divisions at the magnificent Ponds Forge facility, Sheffield, on 17 and 18 September.

The top women's teams play their opening matches at Gloucester on 1/2 October while men's Division 1 launches at Ponds Forge, 8/9 October. See fixtures pages for all the details.
