World Aquatics have published the long-awaited new water polo rules. Changes affecting BWPL include possession times of 28 and 18 seconds, exclusion time also 18 seconds, and other rules intended to make the game more dynamic.
- a player who is awarded a free throw inside 6m can now swim the ball outside 6m and shoot without having to pass to a teammate.
- a team awarded a penalty throw can call a timeout, and both teams can then make substitutions, before the throw is taken.
- teams must start a match with 7 players including a goalkeeper, but can subsequently play with 7 field players and no goalie.
